Music in games is more than background noise — it's the emotional heartbeat of the experience. For Abyss Walker, we set out to create a soundtrack that captures the awe, isolation, and mystery of the deep ocean.
Instruments of the deep
We avoided traditional orchestral arrangements in favour of experimental sound design. Hydrophone recordings, processed whale songs, and custom‑built metallic instruments create an otherworldly sound that feels genuinely aquatic.
Dynamic music systems
Abyss Walker uses a layered music system that responds to the player's depth, proximity to danger, and emotional state. Tension builds organically as you descend, while moments of discovery are rewarded with warm, ethereal swells.
Silence as a tool
In a game about isolation, silence is powerful. We deliberately leave space in the composition — moments where the player hears only their own breathing and the distant groan of the ocean. These quiet moments make the music, when it arrives, deeply impactful.
Collaboration with nature
We spent time on the Welsh coast recording ambient sounds — waves, wind, seabirds — and wove these into the fabric of the soundtrack. The result is a score that feels connected to the real world, grounding the fantasy in something tangible.
